Wrong ... You don't need GStreamer at all if you want to use VLC. 
GStreamer is a seperate project.

FFmpeg has nothing to do with GStreamer FFmpeg except the latter one 
extends old GStreamer to enable formats supported by FFmpeg and not by 
other plugin series (Good, Bad, Ugly).
