A <snippet> from my op:
seems the authors had to grapple with something similar, requiring
sed -i 's#l \(gtk-.*\).sgml#& -o \1#' docs/{faq,tutorial}/Makefile.in ...,
before firing
./configure --prefix=/usr --sysconfdir=/etc,
I still get hit by a similar doc creation (?) error ...
