I'd expect it to have given a slew of errors if this really was the problem,
but the only thing I can think of that may cause this is a lack of disk space.

Admittedly, that's a pretty unlikely scenario, to have just enough room to untar
the package, but then not enough for it to write the Makefiles.  Is there 
anything
useful in config.log?
