Looking at this, it seems that PAM files are not in place. I have
submitted PAM files for LFS to gdm upstream some time ago. They will get
auto installed if /etc/lfs-release is present, otherwise you'd have to
specify --with-distro=lfs.

Also, I see you are running in a VMware VM. I have noticed that even if
vmwgfx is loaded (3D in guest is enabled) that gnome-shell might fail to
start or fail to work properly.
