Never mind - I've now looked at the page. When I realised I hadn't
done the PAM files part of shadow, I fixed that and ignored what was
in front of it, which was the sed to shut this up.

No, we all do that sort of thing. E.g. my question to you on opencv.
I don't particularly like pam either, but it is useful in some
environments. The problem is that other apps demand it unconditionally
and don't work properly if it's not installed.
