I suspect it is a hardware problem, perhaps a motherboard or bios
issue (did I mention that I usually buy cheap motherboards ?).

For the kernel, if I stop and repeat sometimes it builds ok and
soemtimes it doesn't.  I think that is the definition of "flakey
hardware".

I've just looked at my notes - I don't have a record of when the
phenom first gave problems, but in 2012 I was using -j3 : that was a
year before I tried building with make-4.0 so that seems irrelevant.
