My new build machine is an intel haswell. On the abortive 7.9-rc1 system (abortive because of the glibc issue) I have ended up by installing kf5 and plasma, along with sddmR,. to check that upgrading wayland to 1.10 seems ok. But when I rebooted to graphical mode, both icewm and xfce worked fine, but the 'slider' on the 'colourful' plasma start screen never got beyond about 25% and then I got a black screen with a mouse pointer.
I vaguely recall that Bruce might have had a similar problem last year, but I thought that had been fixed. Looking at google, I see suggestions to rename ~/.cache, ~/config amd ~/.kde4 - I do not have ~/.kde4 but I did have ~/.kde (with sockets named for the machine from which I copied the /home files), so I renamed all of those : that is enough to make xfce think this is a new start, so I probably need to undo all the moves, but it does not solve the problem. There was also a suggestion (on that reliable technical forum slashdot) to use uxa acceleration for the intel driver - but I am already doing that. Somebody else suggested running 'plasmashell' from the runner (Alt-F2), but I do not get a dialog on the black screen, and from a tty plasmashell cannot connect to the display. A further suggestion was to give it 5 minutes, in case it eventually started to work : for the moment I am not willing to wait that long. Once I've had some sleep, I'm intending to build 7.9-rc2 from this system so I'll probably use icewm and get on with that - unless anybody has any likely fixes ? New hardware - it's always fun, isn't it ? Isn't it ? Waddya mean, it's always new problems ?
