I suspect the SATA cable on the add-in card had become slightly
loose - my experience of SATA cables in the past week is
discouraging, they do not seem to connect as reliably as the old ATA
connectors. On the new box I had some vagaries while putting it
together (initially with a couple of random old spinning drives to
check what connected where, the RAID drives were still in the old
server at that time) and then it seemed ok for the best part of a
week - meanwhile I had fun and games putting SSDs in the old box,
cables kept falling out.

At the moment the RAID is rebuilding and not mounted, will have to
see how things go.
