OK, thanks for that - I'm now a master of the known universe, and
I've changed both cdrom and dvd to /dev/sr0. But no joy. At all.

Running xine from a term, trying to play using the 'DVD' button on
the controller (this system is from the end of May) -

This is xine (X11 gui) - a free video player v0.99.9.

If I then try to open the drive as a file, the xine window is black.
If I click in that window I get a brief flash of the intro screen
(commercial DVD, first choice would be to play the movie, ISTR there
are two other choices) - but too brief for me to be able to see
where I should click to play it. The term shows the vo_vdpau and
libva_info messages, and then

[mpeg @ 0x15e93a0] Could not find codec parameters for stream 3

    Stream #0:3[0x80]: Audio: ac3, 0 channels
    Stream #0:4[0x1d7]: Audio: mp2, 0 channels

and several more examples which appear to be similar. I think those
messages might not be 100% normal : I know all AV apps tend to
produce a lot of messages when run from a term, and a length of
10.16s for t he intro seems plausible, but I thought it had a
soundtrack [ I was testing with the amplifier turned off! ].

Meanwhile, the error messages (from trying to play with the DVD
button) were unpastable and too tiny to read.

I'm about to reboot this box into 7.10, it will be a few days before
it has the full AV stack installed.
