If I open a local jpg in Midori the image doesn't appear. Instead, it looks
as if it opens in a text editor. I've read Midori uses GIO and I have
compiled GConf. I don't see a solution in Edit/Preferences/File Types.
Local html documents also appear as if opened in a text editor. However, html
documents opened at a url appear fine. For instance, BLFS documentation read
online is fine, but downloaded documentation doesn't render properly.
Midori seems to compile and run well but I've apparently done something
wrong. Are the problems related?
ISTR seeing this too. I do not remember exactly what it was, and I fear I have
not written what I did to fix it. Something to do with midori's or DM's file
associations. Or maybe just "update-mime-database"...

Thank you, compiling shared-mime-info-1.6 and executing
update-mime-database fixed the problem.
It's listed as a run time dependency for glib, which is required for
gcr, which is required for Midori.
