Sorry I realised that my message might be misunderstood.

 - To avoid confusion Document Imaging is found under Office Tools on Start
Menu then Programs then Microsoft Office. This is not a reference to the
Tools menus within actual programs.

        Hello Al

I am using Office 2003 with XP Pro and Jaws 8. I think Document Image
Scanning is available in other versions of Office under the Tools sub menu
but I cannot swear to it. It takes a little setting up but as I say I have
found it to be the fastest and most accurate software once this is done. I
was very surprised. I have actually rescanned books I did originally with
Kurzweil in order to get the better accuracy.

Regards

David

Subject: [Blind-Computing] Re Fast Scanner

Dear Tony

I started studying law last year and purchased a fast scanner to help me
with this.

The scanner I bought was the Canon DR 2580 which has performed very well
with duplex scanning at about 25 pages a minute = 50 pages. This cost me
?550 in the U k and has been worth every penny. I have scanned thousands of
pages for myself and a friend who is a blind law lecturer. I think that
currently there are about 2 dollars to 1 pound but kit is often
cheaper in the US compared to expensive U K.

. I did not buy the flatbed add on for this scanner as this is about ?300. I
purchased a second hand small Canon A4 flatbed for about ?30 on EBay which
covered my flatbed needs which have not been very great.

I have never had to cut bindings off books and tearing the pages out of
books and feeding then in batches into the 2580 has worked fine for me with
very rare paper jams or other problems. In that sense it has worked a dream.
Sadly the books are ruined for sighted people but at least are usable for
me.

Basically I had to decide what books needed to be read and purchased them.
It is always worth contacting publishers to see if they will provide an
electronic version. Oxford University Press sent me a free copy of a book
when I explained what I was having to do for example.

I have ended up using the Document scanner utility with Microsoft Office.
Oddly I have found this to be by far the most accurate and fast scanning
software with this kit. It has outperformed for example Kurzweil, Omni
page, and Textbrige on my system. I was given this advice by the hardware
providers when I said I wanted to buy the best software for this scanner.
They confessed that they did not want me to waste money on unnecessary
software. I think they saw me as a charity case and so forgo the
opportunity to sell me something.

I had already bought Kurzweil and Omni page however but they were right - I
have been better off with Document Image Scanning in the Office Tools menu.

Office document Imaging can sends text to Word in HTM format. I then save
as a RTF file in word. The interface is slightly more cumbersome than
Kurzweil but accuracy is far far better in my experience.

In Document Imaging you need to change options to use the driver software
provided by Canon. Make sure that you do not select duplex scanning in
Document Imaging and instead set this option within the Canon driver
interface which should pop up when you select scan. After scanning simply
select send pages to Word in the tools menu and Word will open with your
scanned text.

Hope that helps.

David
