For years, I have been using Real Player instead of WinAmp. I prefer the
Explorer style display that the program gives you and I can easily burn CDS
with the software. But when I tried to get the thing to play MIDI files, it
just wouldn't until yesterday. I got help from a Support person at Real.com.
He called himself Chris but his accent was thick enough to be mashed potatoes.
But this guy had more patience than anyone I have ever worked with. If anyone
else uses Real Player, the 10.5 version will play MIDI files but only after it
is properly configured.

There is a check box which asks you if you want Real Player to be your
universal player for all media. Normally that works but MIDI is not one of
the default options. You have to uncheck that box and check "Configure Media
Manually" instead. This is all under Tools and the Media section.
There is a list of media types which is amazing and contains about 30 different
kinds of media. If you hit the "Select All" option, then and only then, will
Real Player handle that kind of file.

SPECIAL NOTE:
Real Player's free version is not supported by their telephone Customer
Service. But Real Player Plus only costs about $20 and it's worth every
penny. Once you purchase and download Real Player Plus, you can get the
support you need from their center. However, it is not an 800 number. The
listing has a 206 area code which puts it somewhere in the west, probably near
the state of Washington.
