Lisa, The higher the bit rate, the better the quality. Without going into a lot of detail, when you rip to MP3 format, some of the sound in the file is lost. Most of the sound are frequencies that are not heard by the human ear. Unless you have really good hearing, ripping at 128 bit is normally acceptable. Most people don't hear the frequencies lost at this bit rate, but then there are some that say they do. HTH
