Hi lisa,

by default, I believe IE checks for updates every 24 hours, someone please 
correct me if i'm wrong. as far as slowing the machine down goes, that'll 
only happen if you allow attached files, for example, MP3 files to be 
automatically downloaded, otherwise, all that happens is an HTmL file 
containing the text of the RSS feed is pulled down to your machine, but I 
don't know where it gets saved, anyway, we're talking seconds to download 
one of those, so you shouldn't notice any performance hits.
