Isn't there a option on the file menu when reading an email in outlook to save it as something else: File | Save as...
In that dialogue you would tab tosave as, and there should be an option for text files, which would be the simplest/smallest option, and those text files could then either be opened in something simple like notepad, or opened in and converted into word.
