Hi Patricia,

As you've already seen, most external drives are plug and play, so you don't
need to do anything else when you plug in the drive.

I do recommend you do something before you do anything with the drive.

After you've plugged in the drive, go to the My Computer icon on your
desktop, press enter on it, highlight the external drive, and press
alt+enter to get to the properties.

Virtualize the window, and arrow down through the information to see what
the drive is formatted as.

If it says anything but NTFS, like FAT or FAT32, then you need to re-format
the drive before you use it.

FAT and FAT32 are more unstable then NTFS, that's why most drives are
formatted in NTFS.

To format the drive, press escape to close the virtual window, and escape
again to get out of the drive's properties.

If the drive is still highlighted, press the applications key, and arrow
down to format...

It will give you the option of which format to format the drive in, at which
point, you select NTFS, and make sure the size of the drive is correct.

Tab to the start button, and have at it. Smile.
