Hi Mark, as you've been told, unless your desktop has a wireless card
attached to it, you can't use the wireless gateway to connect.

You can purchase wireless cards that come in various formats, internal, and
external.

The internals are really simple to install, and if you're really comfortable
getting into your computer, you should be able to just plop it into the
socket, screw in the card, and you're good to go.

External options will come in USB type cards, and Ethernet cards you can
plug into those ports and connect with.

By the way, the fat telephone wire you're looking for is an
Ethernet/straight through cable, or straight through RJ45.

The smaller telephone wires are RJ11.

My brother tells me you can by the RJ45 cables at dollar stores nowadays, so
they really must be common place, which impresses me to no end.
