I don't want to confuse anyone, but it can either mean kilobyte (usually the B is capitalized), or kilobit (usually the b is in lower case). The latter is used most of the time for broadband transfer rates. For instance, Verizon claims my DSL is capable of 760 kilobits per second. A bit is a "binary digit", either a 1 or a 0. A byte is made up of 8 bits.

In ascending order! Start with Kilobytes at the bottom end, 1000 kilobytes equals 1 megabyee. 1000megabytes equal 1 gigabyte. 1000 gigabytes equal 1 terabyte at the top end!
