David, I've used jaws 9 and 10 with it, and it seems to work ok.

Good point. It is Jaws 8. I will try the demo of 10.

David, What version of jaws are you using? It's not as inaccessible for me
as it sounds like it is for you.

Update on AVG and Firewall Settings

Further to my last post I went into AVG advance Firewall settings for stand alone PC as this was the only accessible part of the program I could find. I
set it to find networks.

On my PC restart AVG detected the Home network but the only options allowed
again were to block stand alone or allow. As I wanted my home network I
selected allow. My home network is back but on checking with the AVG user
interface the entire firewall settings have been changed back to allow all, the settings I had been advised not to have. So I am no further forward and I am presumably running a PC at risk. Very frustrating. I cannot understand
that a part of the software that is obviously designed to detect home
networks does not have the option to select the appropriate home network
settings. Calling these settings computer and domain is also not very
helpful or intuitive.

I am now minded to switch to another anti virus / internet security package even though I have a year of AVG licence left. . Does anybody know if AVAST
supports home networking more intelligently?

Subject: Re: [Blind-Computing] AVG 8

I am getting a little disillusioned with AVG and its Firewall. I rung
their technical support a few months ago and they told me I had to upgrade
to version 8 before they could address a Malware infection on my PC. In the
event they could not help anyway and I had to restore my PC from a Ghost
image to resolve the problem. Nevertheless I upgraded to version 8 to try and prevent future problems. The problem is that in version 8 accessibility
with Jaws has plummeted.

Seeing the issues today about what settings the Firewall should b on I
rang AVG technical support . Like others I had chosen the allow all setting
as opposed to block all or stand alone PC. AVG tech support said that
actually none of these options suited a PC user with a home network linking to a laptop for example. It seems that because of the hidden nature of the
appropriate settings I have been incorrectly keeping the setting on allow
all and receiving minimal protection. No wonder I have been having to resort
to Super Anti-Spyware!

They recommended that the Firewall configuration wizard be run completely
from scratch and apparently from this wizard there is an option to select
Computer and Domain as an option, this option does not appear in the main
settings of AVG 8 . Apparently you can then nominate a name for your home
network which does not have to correlate to your actual home network name.
This option will apparently allow you to have firewall protection and use a home network. The other advice was not to try and modify existing settings
as this apparently causes problems. Start with a completely new
configuration wizard..

The problem is that I have spent the last 30 minutes trying to locate the
Configuration Wizard for the Firewall within a very flaky User interface. I
have been using the Jaws cursor and the PC Cursor. At the moment I am able
to locate a Firewall button using the Jaws cursor but no amount of real or
virtual mouse clicking will activate this button. Space or enter will not
work on this button either. You can enter Firewall settings through the menu
but again I cannot find a button to start the configuration wizard. I'll
try restarting the PC in a minute to see if that accessibility can be
improved.

Given that home networks are pretty common these days I am quite annoyed
that the default installation of AVG appears to lead you into a risky
Firewall setup. If anybody else can set up computer and domain as the
profile within the AVG 8 firewall I would be very glad to hear how they did
it.

Oh no. I have told it to "allow all", should I have chosen "standalone
computer" instead? I'll do it now, but any thoughts would be greatly
appreciated.

Subject: [Blind-Computing] AVG 8

Hello,

I just installed the AVG 8 and all that went fairly well. I just had a
concern in regards to the firewall settings and was wondering if anyone on

here might be using this and can tell me what exactly should I check or
not check for the firewall settings.
I did run the scan and it detected all the ports I need to be allowed to
go through the firewall.
A last screen popped up regarding the firewall stuff such as it detected
my LAN settings and gave me 3 options...allow all, block all and stand
alone computer*I chose this last one*
Also a couple of box's to be checked and I didn't check either and last 2
were for a name so the firewall can use that name when it loads and a
profile and I chose no profile.

I did check within the AVG through my systems tray and found I am fully
protected and the firewall is fully functioning. So I guess I did that
right and I wonder if that last screen was just personal info if you chose

to set it up that way?

I have to remind y'all the last time I tried to install this, I got a
screen saying I had to uninstall Office and Outlook Express which I did
neither and canceld it.
Since that time, I have installed Office 2003 and would you know...that
never popped up during the install of AVG 8.
