Hi Jack,
Can you explain why certain microphones that you use with cassette
recorders cannot be used with computers? I have a Sony microphone
connected in the mic jack and whenever I record something with
GoldWave, the volume output is so low even though I set up the
recording level at 100%.
Any thought on this matter will greatly be appreciated.

Hi AC,
First of all, All USB ports are the same. if your system is 1.0 or 2.0, any
USB device will still work fine in it. As far as microphones? You can find
all kinds of desk mics or headset/microphone combos. And the technology has
become so good over the past several years that you can get a really high
quality microphone for really little money. And by little, I mean around 15
dollars. They have USB headphones and they have the standard 2-prong mini
plug kind. But you have to use a microphone that is designed for computer
use. You can't use a regular cassette recorder mic with a laptop or
computer. Not sure if this helps or not.

Subject: [Blind-Computing] Microphone suggestions and computer jack
inquiries
Hi list,
It's AC. I am searching for a microphone that can be used for on-line
chatting, voice recording for a podcast, or just for note taking.
Also if possible, I would like to find some type of speakers or headset
with all of the above capabilities.
I have a 4 year old HP Pavilion notebook. I believe I only have one more
USB port available, and it is located on the right side of my computer
when it is facing me.
I have read about there being USB hubs to expand the ports. Are there any
recommendations? Also How do you determine if your USB port is 2.0 or an
earlier version?
On the left side of my laptop, I have a couple of jacks for audio
output/input. The one next to my DVD R/RW drive is for plugging in
headphones, and I believe the second one is for a set of speakers or
microphone.
There is also another horizontal slot for something else next to these
two jacks, but I don't know what it is for.
However, I tried using a Phillips Universal microphone I bought from
Wal-Mart but it didn't fit into the second jack. I even used the jack
adapter that came with it but no go.
I tried it in the first jack, but the audio was muted, so I unplugged it.
I am guessing that the first jack is for audio output only.
Do any of you have any more suggestions for other
microphones/headsets/speakers that I can try with my system and where I
can get them?
I am using Windows XP Home SP2 and Jaws 8 on a HP Pavilion ZD8000.
I Hope this e-mail wasn't too long. :)
Thanks in advance.
AC
