Have you tried going through the system's tray for AVG?
I think the hot key for update is, Alt U or it could be Alt I
Are you using version 8?
If so, if you go to your desktop and enter on AVG a drop down list of
components appears, you down arrow to whatever one you want and then you
enter on it and then you tab across to make changes until you get to an
apply or an ok button.
