I've been following this thread, and I need some clarification.  Is there 
absolutely no sound at all?  If this is the case, then you shouldn't be able 
to hear Narrator either.  Or, is it a case of there's no system sounds and 
you can't hear Jaws?
Because if you can hear narrator, then you obviously have sound.

FWIW, on windows XP, my standard way to see if the sound is working at all
is to hit the left shift key 5 times in quick succession since this makes
the sticky keys dialogue pop up with a very noticeable sound.

Just hit escape to then close it.
