    I'm using Word 2000
    My mistake,the correct key combination is
    control + alt + 1, or 2, or 3.
    As far as I can tell, you can only create heading levels 1, 2 or 3 in 
this
    manner.
    I'm not very well versed in Word, so someone who is more knowledgeable
  will
    have to add to this.

      Select the text that you want as a heading,
      then press alt + 1, for heading level 1, alt + 2, for heading level 2
  etc.
