It does sound like there may be something deeper wrong if you cannot amend
it properly through the normal  applet. There may be some kind of registry
fix if you check on Google but personally this is the sort of problem which
prompts me to apply my Norton ghost restore of my clean image. It takes
about 40 minutes to run but seems quicker in the long run. I hope you have
such an option.

David, I found the start menu in the control panel and entered it but 
entering the classic view produced lists of things I wasn't sure about.  I 
checked some and succeeded only in making the start menu worse than it was. 
In fact, I think I'm lucky to have been able to return to the start menu 
rather than the classic view.  Still no search, etc.  Thanks for trying.
