Correct, the USB cable supplies the interface and also any power the card requires for it's operation. As to the point of which is the best card, that is completely subjective to the person and their respective needs or preferences. Anybody almost could hook up an external sound card but the internal models require some mechanical skill taking out the old card or the like. I have a total of 3 sound cards 2 of which are external which in fact what I use exclusively for a long time now as my creative internal gave out the ghost a while back. If I wish to do some recording of tapes or records to my hard drive then I'll setup my turtle beach but if all I am doing is normal use then this little $15 C-Media works perfectly for me. The external sound card is one that has a USB cable that plugs in to your computer. Hope this helps.
