Correct, the USB cable supplies the interface and also any power the card 
requires for it's operation. As to the point of which is the best card, that 
is completely subjective to the person and their respective needs or 
preferences. Anybody almost could hook up an external sound card but the 
internal models require some mechanical skill taking out the old card or the 
like. I have a total of 3 sound cards 2 of which are external which in fact 
what I use exclusively for a long time now as my creative internal gave out 
the ghost a while back. If I wish to do some recording of tapes or records 
to my hard drive then I'll setup my turtle beach but if all I am doing is 
normal use then this little $15 C-Media works perfectly for me.
