There is no longer a link for Preferences on Google. Instead it is called Search Settings. The page that opens is easy to navigate by headings. I usually just go to the heading for Number of results. I like 50 results since I don't like having to going to lots of pages and getting my bearings each time. I also like each result to open in a new window which is the next topic in that heading. Be sure to save your settings. For some reason these settings become erased now and then and I have to go back to reset them. Hope this helps.
