Some pen drives do have small slider switches that allow you to lock
them/make them read only, but if you really can't find anything like that,
are you sure this is your original, own one, and that it didn't get swapped
around with someone else's one somehow - unlikely, but still.
Also, I think windows 7 has a way to sort of lock pen/flash drives when they
then get used on other machines, but don't think that would really stop you
from formatting them.
When you try to format this drive, maybe make sure it's contents aren't
being displayed since this would sort of put them in use, which also
shouldn't stop you from formatting it, but I suppose it just could.
In other words, in something like windows XP, and I think also in later
operating systems, hit windows key + E to open windows explorer, if not
already in the file/drive listing, tab over to it, move down to the flash
drive itsself, hit the context menu key, and look for either a format option
there, or else hit enter on properties, and then in that dialogue, ctrl +
tab over to the tools section and look for a format button or something
there.
Stay well

Subject: [Blind-Computing] Problems formatting pen drive
Hi guys
wonder if anyone could help with a really strange problem I've got with a
pen drive. I've had this pen drive for about 6 months, up until today it
was fine. I went to move a file on to it and windows told me it was right
protected. I hadn't changed anything so don't know why I got that
message. When I looked on the pen itself there were about 64 files but
non of which I'd placed on the drive. the file names were really weird.
I did consider the drive had a virus of some kind so thought I'd format
it. I cant appear to format the drive, windows keeps telling me I don't
have permission and the drive is right protected.
Does anyone know what the problem is and how to solve it? or is this a
dead drive.
I'm using vista so wondered if that was another issue here.
any help would be appreciated.
thanks in advance
Elaine
