Hi Gerald,
Consider this:
The cartridge does not protrude from the machine, eliminating the worry of
damage if the player is moved.
Also, if the person using the machine, has large fingers like myself, the
cartridge is much easier to push into the slot,
compared to a flash drive which could be more difficult to plug into the
center of that slot.
The fact that it requires a cable to connect to the computer, can be a plus,
because it gives a person more flexibility when connecting other USB devices
to their computer.
Convenience and specialized items will always carry a higher price tag, and
this particular item is very inexpensive.
The cartridge only becomes expensive if you are comparing the storage
capabilities to that of a flash drive.
HTH,
Rick Justice

I would beg to differ that $11.95 is a "good Price" for a 2gb flash drive
that works with the NLS player when Buy.com is selling the Kingston DT101
4gb flash drive for only $7.95 with free shipping. The DT101 works well
with the NLS player and can be inserted into either the side USB port or
the front cartridge slot. And unlike the NLS cartridge, it does not
require a separate USB cable to connect it to a PC.

Keep in mind, that the shipping is free because it is "Free Matter",
so it may take a little longer to receive, but it's a good price and
worth the wait.
