if your asking how to have my computer, my documents, my network places,on
the desktop, using XP,do the following;
1, start menu,
2, setting/control panel,
3, "d"=display,
4, ctrl+tab=desktop,
5, now tab and enter on, customize desktop....
6, now, you can use up or down arrows, or, right or left arrows, select a
item, and check with the spacebar,
now, tab and press enter on, okay button.
now, alt+f4 your way out of the display/control panel.
you now should see my computer, my documents, on desktop.

i keep getting no window is active message and i want to leave the desktop

try the following;
1, desktop;
now, press ctrl+spacebar, you will hear jaws say, not selected,
2, press applications key,
up arrow and enter on personalize,
3, now tab and enter on, change desktop icons link;
4, now you can use your right arrow and press spacebar on the items you
wish to have appear on your desktop,
example;
computer, users files, network, recycle bin, and, control panel,
once you have checked the items, then tab and enter on,
okay button, then, alt+f4, to close the personalize menu.
