hello mike
thank you for this
i did that and now when i start the computer neither windows messenger or windows live messenger start when the computer starts up after closing one of them i did get the message running in the back ground even though this was unchecked
it asked me to click to not display this message again
not sure if i check that the program will do as required and not run in the background

however neither of these are in the system tray anymore
and of course i did the same for webbie calendar and that neither starts on start up or is in the system tray so hopefully that may of been from before i made the adjustments to both the messenger programs i am going to do the same with these steps as i have done with other items you sent to me
paste them in a text document for future use
many thanks

Yvonne

HI Yvonne;

I just played around with a computer & this is what I found. Do the
following.
1. Press the windows key to open the start menu.
2. Press the letter P, for all programs.
3. Press the letter W, until you land on Windows Messenger, & press enter.
4. Press Alt + T, for tools, & Press the letter O, for options.
5. When options opens, you should be on the personal page.
6. Control + tab, 2 times, or, right arrow 2 times, to the Preferences tab.
7. Tab 1 time and there should be something saying Run windows messenger
when windows starts, this box should be unchecked, if it isn't, press the
spacebar to uncheck it.
8. Tab 1 more time & there should be something saying, allow Windows
Messenger to run in the background, if this box is checked press the
spacebar to uncheck it.
9. Now tab to okay & press enter. You're done.

Whenever you do Microsoft updates be careful not to install Windows
Messenger or Windows Live Messenger updates. If you do, this might turn
Windows Messenger / Windows Live Messenger back on again. In case this
happens save these steps somewhere so you will have them handy if you need
to turn it off again. Hope this helps. Take care.
Mike

 Hi Yvonne,
the option to control this is located within messenger.
 goto tools and options.
then the sign-in section. Uncheck the start messenger whenever I login to
my computer.
 thanks
 rick
