Maria, you have a couple of choices that I'm aware of and I imagine someone
will come up with others as well.
As rated by several organizations serving the blind, the most compatible
scanner for use with programs like Open book and Kurzweil is hewlett
Packard. These days, they make multiplex devices which scan, copy and fax,
all at the same time. However, they still do market stand alone scanners at
approximately $140. Several other companies make excellent scanners like
Cannon and even Lexmark but you have to be careful since some of them are
not supported by those programs.
There is one scanner manufacterer that I can strongly recommend against.
Recently, Linda bought me an Epson scanner. I thought that I would just be
able to hook it up and it would work like my old HP did. Wrong! I was
never able to get it working at all, using Open Book.
I finally had to return it. That was very upsetting to Linda, naturally.
She's my wife by the way.
Freedom Scientific has a list of supported scanners on their site, in the
section dealing with Open Book. But I would steer clear of Epson. Heaven
only knows why and probably someone on this list has made an Epson scanner
work. But I just don't have the time or the patience to fool around. Epson
scanners are excellent in all other respects. It's a shame they didn't work
for me.

Subject: [Blind-Computing] Looking for a scanner

My old Microtek scanner died, and I'm looking for a replacement.
I'm using Kurzweil as my scanning program.
What would be a good scanner to use these days?
Thanks.
