This viewpoint might spark some controversy, but unless you are using
applications which require the Java Runtime Environment, you are
better
off not having Java installed on your computer at all. This would
minimize your exposure to potential flaws and subsequent exploits in
the
JRE. I have been running my systems without the JRE for about two
years
now, with no issues. If you try to use an app which requires the JRE,
it
will tell you and you can choose to install it at that time.
I have also taken this approach with all of my clients computers and
have
had no negative feedback, yet.
I did not come up with this approach by myself. I got it from Steve
Gibson via the Security Now podcast. It made sense to me, so I have
embraced it and now endorse it.
