I just put an icon on my desktop to the data partition.

That explains everything. So, since Windows is putting everything in the OS
by default, if I were to move my music for example to d:\ when I type music
in the searchbox will it find it or do I then start having to switch to that
drive first always? And, e-mail and all is in c:\. How would you manage it
at this point because what you say does make sense.

There is also a trick of numbers that hard drive manufactures play on people
that you might not be aware. They base total size on the base ten system
where computers base total size on the base two system. In short for example
a drive advertised as a 320 GB on the shelf is only 298 GB to the computer.

A couple of other examples would be a 640 is really a 596, and a tera byte
is really around 931 GB.

It sounds like your drive is partitioned which means that a single physical
drive is split up so that the computer sees it as 2 or more logical drives.
Personally I always do that to my systems placing my data on a separate
partition from the operating system.

Your steps worked perfectly. But, the information makes no sense to me. I am
under the impression that I have a 340GB hard drive. Under C: which is where
my operating system is located, there is 58Gb used and 3 available for a
total of 61. So, I looked at the D drive which is labeled Data. There is 201
GB available and 500mb used. My Music, Documents, e-mail, programs,
everything seems to be going into the c: drive. I'm feeling pretty dumb at
the moment, but how am I supposed to manage such a hard drive? When I bought
the computer, I was told D: was a backup drive so I've never even opened it
thinking it was just backups of Windows and such.

Hello;

Windows-key+e=windows explorer.

2, now highlight local disk "c", do not enter.

3, bring up properties with alt+enter,
Or you can press applications key, and up arrow and enter on properties.

Now, rout jaws to PC,
Insert+minus,
Now start arrowing down, you will find the information.

Where do I find the amount of available space left on my hard drive? I'm
using Windows 7. I looked on the website but didn't see anything I thought
would tell me.
