Norman, Are you using an IOS device?
Because, putting my gmail account on my iPhone, I didn't have to do any of this procedure. Just entered the email and password, the i Phone did the rest. If you use Gmail you want to enable imap. You have to do this on the web interface by going to settings. Then when you are setting up your account in your e-mail client, where it says pop3 press down arrow until you here imap. You will have to change your server settings. For the incoming server change the security to ssl and the port number to 993. For the outgoing server change the security to tls and the port to 587.
