Margaret,

In Internet Explorer 9:
Press ALT+F to open the Menu.
Press the Left Arrow Twice to "Delete Browsing History", & the Up Arrow Once
to "Internet Options".
(It claims the Shortcut Key to the Options is O, but sometimes it thinks you
mean to "Open A File Location" and then you have to start all over again.)
Tab to "Delete Browsing History on Exit" and make sure it's Checked.
Tab to the "Temporary Internet Files & History" Button & hit Enter.
You can then Tab to the various settings such as how much disk space to use
for the temporary files, and if you set it to zero, then it can't store any
in the first place.
If you edit the "Days to keep things in the History" part, edit it to zero &
it won't retain anything past the moment you close IE either.
Tab to Apply, then Ok, and restart your browser.
It should no longer remember any History, nor (if you set it to do so)
retain any cached files for later use.
Note that this can include Cookies, so you'll have to re-enable them each
time you visit your favorite sites.
(As in, you'll have to log in each time, manually entering your UserName &
Password.)
You can, if you like, make sure that the files the "Temporary Files" it
deletes *don't* include the Cookies to your often visited sites, as this
reduces the amount of bother you go through in visiting them.
But while this is convenient to you, it's also a Security Issue, as anyone
*else* whom uses your computer may be able to log in as you on those same
sites.
("No Little Billy, you may NOT go shopping on Mommy's Toy Store Account!
BAD! Bad Billy!")
*Cough*
*Grin*

Hope that helps.
