It only closes the current window that you are in. Alt + F4 will not close other Word applications that are open.
If you want to close all open windows for Word, use the following steps: Press Alt + F (File) Press X (Exit) You will be prompted to save files if any edits have been done. You may also be asked if you want to review recovered documents at a later date, I usually state yes and continue. (Never know if there's a document you want recovered from there!)
