so many different scenerios, but it's your "usually" word that gets me. I'll
set up a folder on my desktop, would rather have it in "my documents", but
will try your suggestion.. why would my pc change from simply going through
the download steps, to all of these new steps?

Usually downloaded books will default to a download file.

If you are using Windows 7, use your windows key and put in the word
download in the edit box.
You should find your books in the download file that shows up.

Good luck!

that was it, but after doing alt + n, and tabbing to save, and then enter,
it doesn't ask where to save the file, and does the download. after it
finishes, I can't find it anywhere. any ideas?
is there a way to stop the "information bar from popping up? tom

It is possible the information bar is popping up. Listen closely for a soft
tone, but even if you don't hear it hit alt + the letter N to access the
information bar. From there it should be self evident what you are to do.

I didn't make myself clear. as it's always been, after the download link is
hit, a dialog box pops up asking if you want to open or save the file, and
this has always happenned, but now the dialog box doesn't pop up. could this
be a bard, or a pc problem? t

Tom:

The procedure isn't as fully automatic as it sounds.

After entering, to acknowledge your desire to download, you nedd to tab,
twice more, to where it will ask in which folder you wish to download to.

If this matter is decided, all you need do is hit enter, and your book is on
it's way.

I can no longer download any audio book from bard. I get to the where it
asks to download the book, I hit enter, but nothing happens, so the download
doesn't occur. I use jaws 14, win 7, i.e. 8
