Hi.
Well, text adventures are not exactly rpg games, but are somewhat
similar in there way. In rpg games you have character creation, most
things depend on a dice roll, etc... In text adventures it is more or
less an interactive story where you, playing the character, get to play
through the story world.
Usually, there is a specific order to things, but as you explore the
game world you won't know that until you play through the game. Let's
take Arthors Quest for example.
The game starts you out in the cemitary.
You first need to hide behind agrave stone and wait for everyone to come
and leave. next go to the church and pray. After that you reach the city
square. Unfortunately you are hungry. However, you can't get food from
the taverin until you find Merlin's cave. So your first adventure is
figuring out where Merlin lives.
Let's suppose you find the cave and talk to Merlin. He gives you special
powers to change shapes, and advice how to proceed with rescuing
Excalibur. However, before you can complete that adventure there are
many small adventures involved.
You need to go back to town, obtain food, rescue a bird who gives you
the location of spices, rescue a smithie, who gives you the location for
a sword, joust with an invisible knight, sneek past a sleeping dragon,
battle a black knight, etc... With 80 areas to explore it will take more
than one sitting to explore everything, and find out which item does what.
