Max, you mention that some programs allow the playing of a 78 rpm record at
either 33 or 45 and then translating the recording to the higher speed.
These do work in a pinch, but so far, the ones I've played with don't make
the conversion exactly, the final result is a bit flat. They're not
including decimal points somewhere in the conversion. Also, recording at a
very low speed may put some bass notes below the point where the system
responds flatly. If you're serious about such a project, get a decent
turntable that plays 78's. They don't cost all that much, and some have
direct digital input into your soundcard as well as variable speed and,
some, like my Stanton, have built-in software that allows changing the speed
of the turntable while retaining the pitch. It takes a pretty large change
before you hear any aliases.
