When I went to the school for the blind, in wood shop, we'd lay our project in this big pan of some kind of oil and sponge on the oil and start sanding with fine sand paper. I'd repeat this process for several days. Spend fifteen or twenty minutes sanding and sponging on the oil several times during the sanding process. Sorry I can't remember the type of oil we used.
