Well, if you consider that, in those days, the average household refrigerator had a tiny, tiny little freezer half of which held 2 ice trays you can easily see that efficiency was not at the top of the household refrigerator list. AT that time the double door refrigerator was not yet come. (now, there is a strange, strange sentence) While the refrigerators did have insulation on the outside the freezer section was a complete mess which would ice over and have to be defrosted - frequently in high humidity areas. Those old locker plants were pretty well insulated and they did keep things frozen. Cy, the Ancient Okie...

I had an uncle who ran a similar ice making plant in central BC years ago they used the resultant ice to chill railroad cars of produce. I remember visiting it in maybe 1962 and nearly being knocked out by the amonia they used for refrigerant. Saw a 600 horsepower electric motor they used to run one of several compressors.
