That is what I have always done. I think you are suppose to split wood with the grain. It has always worked well for me. I like to use a wage along with a short handled hammer. works for me.. Please correct me if I am wrong but a tip to remember when splitting wood is to feel the way the grain of the wood is running and strike the wood with your blade going the same way as the grain instead of going across the grain.
