Rule of Toe: A man's size 10 1/2 sneaker is a foot long. 2.Tape Tip: Two different tape measures are liable to give you two different readings, because of the way those little end tabs wobble. So use the same tape throughout the project, or do like the pros do and start from the 1-inch mark on fine work. And don't forget to subtract an inch when you saw to the measurement or go buy another piece at the lumberyard. 3. Hammer It Out: You don't need a tape measure to take rough measurements-use your hammer instead. Measure exactly 1/2 inch from the head of the hammer and mark the handle with a piece of colored electrical tape. Place another piece of tape 6 or 8 inches from the head. If you have a long-handled framing hammer, you'll be able to add a tape stripe at 16 inches. 4. Take It From a Pro: "Measure twice and cut once, and remember, it's a lot easier to trim again than to put wood back," advises our favorite TOH carpenter, Norm Abram. 5. Driveway Dimensions: A driveway should be at least 10 to 12 feet wide on the straight-away and 14 feet at curves.
