You have already received lots of advice to close them in the winter and
open in the summer. A very good modern solution is the thermostatically
controlled vent. You can get them, as they say, at your local home
improvement store. They have a couple of advantages, you don't have to
remember to open or close them and if you get a sudden warm spell in the
winter, as is likely to happen in South Carolina, they will open and then
close again when the weather turns cold.
