Here's an additional thought.  If the situation is what I described in my 
previous message you could go back to the main breaker box and take the 
white wire off of the hot breaker outlet and connect it to the neutral bus 
bar.  That would convert the whole circuit to 120.  Of course, that could 
only be done if the 240 outlet was the only one on that circuit.  That is 
usually the case.  I don't know if it's code, but I've never seen a 240 volt 
circuit with more than one outlet on it.
