Dear Max:
I have an outbuilding which we wired by using a fifty amp 220 breaker in
the home breaker panel and then run an underground 220 cable to my outbuilding
where we then installed a small breaker box out of which we pulled the circuits
for lighting, outlets, a small water-heater, etc. As Ray has said, you will
need to estimate your load and whether or not you will need 220 service in the
shop. I am quite sure that your code in KY will permit such an arrangement.
You do not want to have a separate service for the shop, as your electric
company will charge you a commercial rate, if you are on the T. V. A. system,
which I expect. The commercial rates are higher in several respects.
Our project got a little out of hand as we enlarged the upper story from a
play loft to a motel room with bath. The Wilson motel was used extensively
when my Wife, Sue, worked swing shift. She could sleep out there in the day
while I and our son could continue to live a normal life in the home.
Have fun and enjoy your new shop.

                Yours Truly,

                Clifford Wilson

  Subject: [BlindHandyMan] Backyard workshop.

Hi. Remember last night when I was wishing I had a workshop in the back
yard? Well I have one in the works. I put the idea to Sue and she said if
I wanted it why not get it since we have the money. We ordered a 10 by 16
foot wooden building from Home Depot. It will be built to order by the
local Mennonites so it will be quality work. They will build, shingle, and
paint it then deliver it on a truck. They will set it in place and level
it. It should be here in about 3 weeks. Now all I have to do is figure out
how to get electricity permanently and legally installed. If that is not
possible I will do the extension cord trick. I'll make it myself out of
heavy wire with heavy duty plugs, heavier than you could buy.

  Regards.
