I don't know but I would assume so. The chain would make a lot of indentations in the surface. I think it would also depend on the wood. A softer like pine would probably have much deeper dings than oak. Although the oak would still get banged up.

They took some fairly heavy chains and repeatedly struck the table top creating an old patina. Then they finished the top.
