Use 1/2" wide teflon tape. Wrap it around the threads holding the tape edge flush with the beginning bottom threads of the fitting. Rotate the fitting in the direction that you would to install it and keep tension on the tape so that it is quite tight on the threads as you rotate. Make about 4 full revolutions around the threads.
Teflon tape is for a fitting with at least 2 wires going to it. If there is only 1 wire, it needs to make a ground connection through the threads and the tape could prohibit this.
