A spiral saw would be a terrible choice for this type of job.  The blade is not 
very long, and I have found that you need to make several cuts by increasing 
the depth each time to do this on thick boards.

You could easily do this with a hand saw and a board as a guide, clamped across 
the piece you want to cut.  A circular saw would work great, too.

  They aren't very friendly for use by a blind person. They really need to be 
used with a jig by a blind person. The rotary action of the cutter makes the 
tool want to pull strongly in one direction.

  It might work for you, but it would depend on the task you want to perform. 
Without knowing exactly what you want to do with it, I can't help you much more.
