Paul This works when there is only one switch but he has a switch at the top of the stairs and one at the bottom. So he would have to find out if off is both in the same position or opasit position and then check both switches every time he wanted to check whether the light is on or off. This would work but is quite inconvenient.

Usually when the handle of the switch is in the up position, power is on to the circuit. Some days I can detect if the light is on but not all of the time. Years ago I had a neat smoke detector that screwed into a light socket and the bulb then screwed into this detector. The unit had rechargeable batteries. Whenever you turned on the light the unit would beep letting you know it was charging. I haven't seen any of them in years. Is there some alarm that will beep when the lights are turned on?
